Prayer: It has been said that Martin Luther once said. "I have so much to do that if I didn't spend at least 3 hours in prayer a day, I would never get it done" Sounds like hyperbole to us. But if you look at some of the giants of the faith; DL Moody, William Booth, Amy Carmichael, Charles Spurgeon, etc., you would find that this was the minimum time they spent before God in prayer.
How can we possibly spend even one hour in prayer with our busy schedules? 24 hours in a day; typically 8 for work, 8 for sleep, 8 for??? OK 8 hours of our time. Of course with family stuff maybe more like 2 or 3.
It is approximated that the average American spends up to 8 hours per day on their devices (phones, laptops, games)
The Lord has told me specifically to redeem my time, One day I will stand before Him to give an account of how I spent my life, its called the Judgement (or Bema) seat of Christ
2 Corinthians 5:10 "For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ; that every one may receive the things done in his body, according to that he hath done, whether it be good or bad."
At that time all the earthly things that we spent our time on will be burnt up as hay and stubble, not eternal value.
Think on it this way, did Jesus die on the cross so that you could spend your "free" time washing your mind in amusement?
Now there is nothing wrong with amusement, I think we all need a break from the world to refresh, But the thing is,, as a believer I had spent way too much time watching mindless stuff. Thanks to my wife who did not grow up watching tv. The Lord used her to convict me that I was wasting much of my life away watching Sci Fi.....So I asked Him to redeem my time.
Here is my goal: spend as much time in prayer as I do engaged in secular stuff on tv, movies, games, etc... I am not quite there yet, but thanks be to the Lord, I now have a prayer list that grows each day. My goal is to have it reach 1 hour. If I even pray for one hour per day I will feel like I have started to actually pray.
Why so long? Isn't prayer just talking to God, I do that all the time. Yes to a degree that is true, but once again, if you are concerned about the 1 million or so who perish each week without the Lord, or all the needs in your immediate family, well I think that we need to learn how important this is, Get a hold of God means to spend this time, not just in asking for comforts, health, and wealth, But to listen to Him!!
He has a specific purpose for every believer on the planet, You have been chosen for something. And just so you know, God is big, and I believe that if the entire body of Christ would humble themselves and seek Him like this, that the world would be changed.
But don't let me interrupt your Netflix time..
Be blessed; I am praying for you.....
Recommend that you read anything online or in book from EM Bounds on prayer
Prayer: Jesus gave a model of prayer to His disciples, as such are some of us so lets look at it
8 “Therefore do not be like them. For your Father knows the things you have need of before you ask Him. 9 In this manner, therefore, pray:
Our Father in heaven, Hallowed be Your name.
God the Father, His name is High above every other name. He is exalted above all creation. His very name is sacred. In the Old Testament the Jews would not even, could not even write his name..even now in many versions, when you see the name Lord it refers to that Hallowed One. His name is very sacred, therefore we begin our prayers in humbleness approaching the Father in that way. There is no end to the time one can spend when truly meditating on the greatness of God.
10 Your kingdom come. Your will be done On earth as it is in heaven.
The book of Revelation tells us that someday The Lord will return to the earth and set up a 1,000 year kingdom at that time His will certainly will be done on earth. In the meantime, God has a plan, and we pray for the fruition of that plan. He calls us into various ministries and we ask for His will to be done there. At all times we ask for His will on this earth. Lord show me the things you want and I will want them also. Because, once we realize how fully He loves us..Once we see that Gods plan will ultimately work out for the best,, we pray His will be done. Once again, there is virtually no end to the details of this, as He moves on your heart the various things on this earth, that you see the need for Him. for example for me lately its been the 1,000,000 souls that are dying without Him each week.
11 Give us this day our daily bread.
We ask God to continue to supply our physical needs. Those in the past that gave it all up and trusted in the Lord for their daily provision, have been so blessed by the result. Not in arrogance, but in humility,. And those of us who work for a living understand, that all the talents we have that earn our living are actually from Him. So yes Lord give us what we need for this day. Not what we want necessarily, nor what we might need for tomorrow, for sufficient is the day for its own worries, but what we need today.
12 And forgive us our debts, As we forgive our debtors.
This is the hard one. If you stop and think about all the bad that you have done, if you are a forgiven Christian, then you know the depths of your debt to Him.. I think we usually add to this list, if not daily, at least weekly, So please continue to give us your forgiveness. Not so say we are not already forgiven, but as it says in the scripture, when we ask for forgiveness He is quick to forgive our sins....So lets ask Him and thank Him for that,, for me it might take a very long time,, we do not necessarily want to live in the past, but we want to stay clean in Him. to maintain our walk with him
Then we should or actually are commanded to forgive others, No matter how much you have been wronged, Gods forgiveness is greater, so forgive. I know that many do not believe in this. How can I forgive that? and Yes i know that often the other person is not even sorry. But its not really about them. The forgiveness is for you and God. It releases you from the anger and thus helps heal the pain. It does not mean that you just accept whatever they have done. It means you can be free from it. My favorite story on forgiveness is Corrie Ten Boom. She was in a Nazi concentration camp because her family hid Jews in her home. There was much suffering there and death, and many years later she became a famous Christian speaker, she was once in Germany teaching about forgiveness. After the meeting a man came up to her and she instantly recognized him as the most brutal of the guards that had tortured her and her sister. He told her had had become a Christian, and he desperately needed her to forgive him. Well she did not want to, but felt that the Lord told her to put our her hand to his. When he took her hand she felt a very great warmth flow into her body, they both wept, and she found the truly great power of forgiveness that day.
13 And do not lead us into temptation, But deliver us from the evil one.
The Lord will never lead you into sin. He always provides a way out. this does not mean that you will not be tested. But His testing is to make you better and a stronger Christian. No we pray that God will deliver us from the bonds and snares of the enemy. Satan. Do not forget about him, as he "walks about the earth looking for whom he may devour" Deliver us, Lord. You be the one who rebukes the devil. We are yours , so therefore we ask for your protection.
For Yours is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever
Gods kingdom will last forever. This world and this entire universe will someday pass away. But Gods kingdom will never pass away. Life is in fact a part time job, so lets keep an eternal perspective. We worry so much about this tiny closet of a life in the immense home of 10,000,000 rooms that is eternity. Do not forget it. and The power of God, if you are in His will then your soul will be untouched. Do not fear what man can do, God is the one that can destroy a soul,. so we the believer stay in Him, we are safe in His power. Short story on Gods power. Do you know that the atoms that make up this universe should not stay together, in fact due to the negative and positive parts of the atom they should fly apart. Science does not understand why this happens. so they just made up a name for it "atomic glue Of course no one can see it but we know it exists because matter exists. So we Christians believe the Bible, when it says that Jesus holds together the universe (matter) by His will. Col 1:17 "And He is before all things, and in Him all things consist." (so he holds all thing together) So in fact when He stops doing that. Imagine the power of all those atoms dispersing. One large explosion. so that means that everything will in effect melt with a fervent heat 1 Peter 3:12"looking for and hastening the coming of the day of God, because of which the heavens will be dissolved, being on fire, and the elements will melt with fervent heat" .What power. Oh and by the way do not tell my "scientific" atheist friends that one. they have enough problems figuring out how nothing blew up!! But that is real power my friend.
And the Glory. Well I used to think way back before I was saved, that God was an ego maniac, I mean always going on and on about His glory. But now I realize that it is just a human response to His greatness, and when we proclaim His glory to the world, we are in effect trying to let everyone know that they should be part of this. That the entire universe is a canvas for His glory. And more than that, that the best parts are yet to be seen,l that they are unseen. The Glory of the Lord in heaven, and in the New heavens and the New Earth, will be so intense and so amazing, that there are no words in any language that could fully express it, But yes Thine is the Glory
