Ephesians 6:18 praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, being watchful to this end with all perseverance and supplication for all the saints—
Today I wanted to share one of my “Grand Old Masters”. I call them that because it sounds better than saying Famous Dead Preacher EM Bounds has written more on prayer than anyone else that I know of. I am posting a bunch of his words here with a smidgen of my own thrown in.
All his words are in the quotation marks
”God only works through prayer.” When I first heard that it made me stop and think. But, you know, it’s true. In the Bible every action is from some type of prayer. Even creation was a conversation between the Trinity: The Spirit hovered, The Father spoke, and Jesus (the Word) was spoken. So all that was prayer; communication with God.
“The most important lesson we can learn is how to pray. Indeed, we must pray so that our prayers take hold of God. Prayer puts God in full force in this world. “
“Prayer has an incredible power to arrest and change the purposes of God.”
We see God relenting from His stated purpose because of prayer with Moses and with Abraham. Maybe He is just waiting for us to ask?
"Prayer is the greatest of all forces because it honors God and brings him into active aid.” “Throughout His ministry, Christ made it clear that importunity is a distinguishing characteristic of true praying” importunity means: persistence, especially to the point of annoyance.
“Men ought always to pray, and not to faint” Jesus. Luke 18:1.
We keep asking to the point that it might seem as if we are annoying. But we are just getting in tune to Him
James 5:16 The effective, fervent prayer of a righteous man avails much.
Here is a good definition of "fervent prayer":
“To really pray, to pray until hell feels the ponderous stroke, to pray until the higher gates of difficulty are opened, to pray until the mountains of obstacles are removed, or until the mists are exhaled and the clouds lifted, and the sunshine of a cloudless day brightens-this is hard work, but it is God’s work and mans best labor.”
We pray until we get hold of Him. Until we know His awesome Holy presence Then we should be silent, listening to Him. Then He gives us the things to say. It should be a very Holy and sacred moment. Not just a drive by quick little thanks and hello at the end of the meeting. Not a hurried list of personal desires. But a real heart to heart with the creator of the universe. What a privilege true prayer really is.
